I'm from Arizona so I don't know much about dressing in cold weather. I know layers are key but what do you layer? What should I buy before going on a trip to someplace that very harsh winters? What do people wear in freezing weather?
Layers are good, but when it's way below freezing there are only so many layers you can wear. You will need a good winter coat, one that's lined, insulated and water and windproof on the outside. That's one reason why Columbia jackets and coats are so popular, they are cold rated to -30 water and windproof and they keep you warm on the coldest days. Jackets that look like Columbia's don't keep you warm and dry like Columbia's. A good winter coat or jacket should have a few other Features, especially if you aren't used to cold weather: Look for longer length that covers the butt, don not buy a waist length or bomber length jacket. You lower half will be exposed to the cold and important internal parts will get cold and you will get sick if you are unused to the cold. Look for sleeves that come down to below the wrist, and look for two part sleeve with a cuff on the outside and the inside of the sleeve. The inner part should be close to the wrist to prevent cold or snow from leaking up your arm.The jacket should have either an interior waist band or elastic or drawstring at the waist to keep the clod from leaking up through the bottom of the coat. Look for a cold rating tag, it tells you the temperature range the coat will withstand. And don't forget a hat for the head and ears, ears are the first thing to get frostbitten and much of your body heat can leak out of your head. Wear good winter boots that are insulated, waterproof and have a heavily treaded sole for walking on snow and ice. Don't even think about using uggs as winter boots, they are ruined by snow and slush, they are fashion boots not winter boots. And wear good mitts or gloves, again they should be lined and insulated.
If you are properly dressed in good winter rated outerwear then you don't need to wear so many layers underneath. Indoors are heated, all homes and businesses have central heating so you don't need to wear a coat inside.
I'm not sure you can buy what you need in Arizona. Colorado maybe. If you are heading to Canada or a northern state such as Minnesota then you might want to make one of your first stops a shopping trip for cold rated clothing and footwear. In winter the stores in Canada sell nothing but cold rated clothes.
Here are a few Columbia coats that will keep you warm and toasty and meet all your requirements:

if your a guy i dont know really any clothing lines but get lots of long sleeve thermal shirts, hoodies, thick jackets and pants without holes in them. to help keep your legs warm wear socks that go up to your knees and wear a good pair of shoes or boots. specially if your going to be in snow try to get a good pair of snow boots. they'll help you out alot. Make sure to get some gloves and head gear to keep your hands and head warm. Also for extra wamth you could buy hand warmers. if you dont know what that is you can go look it up on google [=
jackets with fur help keep you warm more easy !!!What do people wear in freezing weather?
cashmere is extremely warm. i have an ann taylor cashmere sweater (not a very thick sweater) and i live in cali. i wore that one time when it was 55degrees and i felt toasty warm while my friends froze up in their bulky down jackets. ugg boots are also really warm. if you're going somewhere really cold (like antarctic or something), splurge and get yourself a really nice anorak (its worth it).
