Whats the weather like in Australia?

I am thinking about 3 different Uni there. They are in Canberra and Sydney. I am from Arizona and just would like to know if there are any extremes in weather?Whats the weather like in Australia?
G'day Emily V,

Thank you for your question.

The extremes in Australian weather are more likely to be heat than cold Canberra is cooler than Phoenix but warmer than most American cities (I have lived in Canberra for thirty years). We have more frosts than Phoenix in winter time and like Phoenix snowfall in the city is rare. It has snowed in the city on a handful of times when I have been here. Canberra has mostly sunny days and even in the winter most days are fine. Sydney is by the coast and has warmer weather but the air quality is not as good as Canberra and travelling times are longer. Rents in both cities would be high by Phoenix standards as Australia has so far been relatively unaffected by the global financial crisis. Canberra is a great city to live in although Sydney would have a more exciting lifestyle.

Canberra would have hotter summer days than Sydney as Sydney would get sea breezes.

I don't know which universities you are considering. I can confirm that the Australian National University is ranked 20th in the world while the University of Sydney and University of NSW are both ranked within the top 50.

I really don't think someone from Arizona would enjoy Canberra's weather at all. I couldn't live there and it's mainly the weather that puts me off the place. That and the fact that it's a VERY boring place though it's probably not quite so boring for a student at ANU..

Check out this week's weather forecasts for the two cities - there's a massive difference between them during winter (temperatures all in Celcius of course)

Go to Climate Information on the top menu for info on the rest of the year.Whats the weather like in Australia?
Canberra has baking hot rather dry summers with lots of flies, and freezing winters with the wind blowing off the snowfields. Not the best weather at all. That said, I don't think Canberra is as bad as people make out. It has a very educated prosperous population with very low unemployment and plenty of good restaurants etc.

Sydney has warm to hot and slightly humid summers with occasional evening storms, and cool to mild winters. Definitely the better option as far as climate because it's coastal.
